Health problems linked to food can include many different conditions. When you mention “nutrition diseases,” you’re likely referring to conditions that directly result from deficiencies or imbalances in specific nutrients within the diet. Nutrition-related diseases are those that have a strong connection to dietary factors, whether it’s the lack of certain nutrients or the excessive consumption of others.

There are many diseases that are related to nutrition. Some examples include:

Pellagra

A disease caused by a deficiency in niacin (vitamin B3) and characterized by symptoms such as skin rash, diarrhea, and mental confusion.

Scurvy

A disease caused by a deficiency in vitamin C. Symptoms include bleeding gums, bruising, and weakness.

Rickets

A disease caused by a deficiency in vitamin D, which can lead to weak bones, deformities, and delayed growth.

Goiter

An enlargement of the thyroid gland that can be caused by a deficiency in iodine, which is necessary for the production of thyroid hormones.

Beriberi

A disease caused by a deficiency in thiamine (vitamin B1). Symptoms include muscle weakness, confusion, and heart problems.

Hypertension

High blood pressure can be caused or exacerbated by a diet that is high in salt and low in potassium.

Gout

A type of arthritis that is caused by a buildup of uric acid in the blood. Gout can be worsened by a diet that is high in purines, which are found in red meat, organ meats, and some seafood.

Celiac disease

An autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of gluten (found in wheat, barley, and rye) triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine. Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and malabsorption of nutrients.

Metabolic syndrome

A cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Metabolic syndrome can be caused by a diet that is high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, and saturated fats.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

A condition in which fat accumulates in the liver, causing inflammation and damage. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is often associated with obesity and a diet that is high in sugar and fat.

Colorectal Cancer

A type of cancer that affects the colon and rectum. A diet that is high in red and processed meats, and low in fiber, can increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Ovarian Cancer

A type of cancer that affects the ovaries. A diet that is high in saturated fat may increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Depression

While depression is a complex condition with multiple causes, some studies have suggested that a diet that is high in processed foods and sugar may increase the risk of depression.

Alzheimer’s disease

While the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease is unknown, some research has suggested that a diet that is high in saturated and trans fats, and low in fruits and vegetables, may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

A condition in which acid from the stomach flows back up into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. GERD can be worsened by a diet that is high in fat and low in fiber.

Dental caries

Also known as cavities, dental caries are caused by bacteria that feed on sugar and produce acid that erodes tooth enamel. A diet that is high in sugar can increase the risk of developing dental caries.
